The start of a new year brings with it plenty of new opportunities. When it comes to social media, it’s easy to think about the latest trends and ideas because it is a continually evolving world. However, getting the basics right is a crucial part of the process. If you’re new to social media, building strong foundations is your first task. Revamping your online presence may require going back to the basics.

  1. Consistent branding and descriptions

Getting the basics starts way before you even think about posting a social media update. If you are already posting on social media, this means making sure your branding is consistent. Now, this doesn’t necessarily have to expect that all your social media images and descriptions should be the same. However, you want it to be as easy as possible for consumers to identify your brand.

For example, this means using consistent brand colours and usernames whenever possible. Your descriptions should also be as easy to identify as your brand, saying they should be descriptive rather than generic. It’s also a smart idea to link your social media graphics to the imagery you use on your website or app. Creating this form of consistency can build trust with your customers and create the idea that your company is well organised.

  1. Having a plan that works for you

It’s clear that having a plan for social media content is essential. However, that doesn’t mean to say that you should just follow what the experts suggest. There is no definitive solution to online success and brands that aim to do things differently are often the ones that succeed. This means you shouldn’t feel pressured to be on specific platforms or create your updates in a particular way.

For example, many brands have a presence on multiple social media sites or post 15 tweets a day. Those strategies may not be right for your business. Instead, you might want to be on just one or two platforms and post updates on just a few days each week. It’s vital that you do what works for you, rather than just posting updates in the hope the engagement might happen in the future. Measure everything, and if it’s not working, then you might want to consider trying something different.

  1. Be consistent with your message and updates

As mentioned, it’s not necessarily important to follow precisely what the experts say. However, it’s crucial to be consistent. This means you should have a clear understanding of which subjects you are going to cover in your updates. It’s also important to have a schedule for your social media content. Even if you only tweet once a day, if you do that consistently, then that is still a schedule that your followers will understand and know what to expect from you.

At the start of 2019, it’s important to think about your social media efforts. As mentioned in this article, creative techniques certainly have their place. However, it’s important to get the basics right first. To that end, remember to be consistent with branding and descriptions, have a plan that works for you and be consistent with your message and updates.
